Wyoming Cowboys will play in Arizona Bowl on NYE

WYOMING – The Wyoming Cowboys are going ‘bowling,’ learning on Sunday they will face the Georgia State Panthers in the Arizona Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

It will be the third appearance in a bowl game in the last four years for the Pokes who finished the 2019 season at 7-5. The Cowboys will come limping into post season play having lost three of their last four games. Wyoming ended the regular season with a 20-6 loss to Air Force.

Wyoming had some bright spots on the season even in the losses. The Pokes gave a national ranked Boise State Broncos (#19) all they could handle in a 20-17 OT defeat on November 9.

Wyoming has never played in an Arizona Bowl, which was included in the 38-bowl game lineup in 2015. The Pokes are 7-8 in bowl games. Their last appearance was a 37-14 victory over Central Michigan in 2017.

Georgia State finished 3rd in the Sun Belt East Division with a 7-5 record. Like the Cowboys, the Panthers rely on a strong rushing game with a solid defense. Wyoming has been experimenting with true freshman Levi Williams at quarterback in rotation with Tyler Vander Waal, who took over for Sean Chambers when he suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Arizona will take place Tuesday, December 31 at 2:30 p.m. It will be broadcast by CBS. Wyoming and Georgia State have never played each other.
