JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County School District (TCSD) shared with parents via email that the Wyoming House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Friday, Jan. 17, to discuss HB0172, which would allow people to carry concealed weapons in schools.

In the email, TCSD Superintendent of Schools Gillian Chapman said that community members could share their viewpoint by contacting a member in the House Judiciary Committee.

“I am in favor of the Second Amendment, however, I have serious concerns about concealed carry in public schools and I am in favor of local control to make these decisions,” Chapman wrote via email.

The bill, called Repeal Gun Free Zones and Preemption Amendments, was sponsored by a group of legislators on Jan. 14. The bill states that guns could be concealed in “any public school, public college or university athletic event taking place on public property that does not sell alcoholic beverages.”

In March, Governor Mark Gordon vetoed House Bill 125, which would eliminate gun safe zones in schools and hospitals.

Starting at 8 a.m. the House Judiciary Committee will be meeting to discuss the sponsored bill. People can sign up to watch the meeting remotely here.
