CORA, Wyo. — Sublette County Unified Fire (SCUF) responded to an escaped agricultural burn northwest of Pinedale in the early hours on Thursday.

A news release from SCUF detailed the agency’s response to the burn near Cora that was reportedly spreading rapidly. Firefighters were dispatched after neighbors called 911 to report the fire around midnight. A total of 22 firefighters and six engines responded to the incident. The volunteer crew fought to get the fire under control, which was fully contained around 4 a.m. Most personnel were released around 6 a.m., while one engine crew remained on scene until 11 a.m.

“This incident is a strong reminder of the dedication and professionalism of our volunteer firefighters,” Fire Chief Shad Cooper said via press release. “They responded in the middle of the night, worked for hours to contain this fire, and helped protect our community from what could have become a much more serious incident. We are grateful for their service and commitment.”

SCUF stated that the 18-acre fire was burning primarily in open meadows and willow bushes. No structures were lost, and no injuries were reported.

This is the second escaped agricultural burn to be reported in the region so far this spring. The warm and dry winter experienced throughout the West is raising the risk of wildfires.
