WYOMING — For all those in need of hearing aid assistance, the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) announced on Wednesday, Aug. 6, that its new Wyoming Adult Hearing Aid Program is now open. The application period will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The state-funded initiative, established by Senate File 57, states, “subject to available state funding, the department shall provide hearing aids for eligible adults.” The health agency expects only 30 to 35 individuals to be assisted in the first year due to limited pilot funding authorized by the Wyoming Legislature.

According to the WDH, the program covers up to one hearing aid per ear, including insurance, fitting and initial ear molds, with a maximum reimbursement of $3,000 for both ears every five years. The WDH notes that hearing tests are not covered in the program.

To be eligible, one must be a Wyoming resident, age 18 or older, and have a diagnosis of “profound hearing impairment,” with 35 decibel (dB) or greater loss in one ear or 30 dB or greater in both ears. Additionally, an applicant’s monthly adjusted gross income must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Generally, Wyomingites will not be eligible for this program if they have private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or other third-party payers. However, applicants with private insurance whose individual out-of-pocket costs for hearing aids exceed $500 could still qualify. Applications will be reviewed individually and determined on a case-by-case basis.

The application can be found on WDH’s website under “Adult Hearing Aid Program.” Applications must be submitted by mail or fax only. Incomplete applications or those missing required clinical information will not be accepted.

The fax number to submit applications is (307) 777-6964 (HIPAA-secure) and the mailing address to send applications is Division of Healthcare Financing c/o Adult Hearing Aid Program 122 West 25th Street, 4 West Cheyenne, WY 82002.

Applicants who are approved and placed upon a waitlist will receive notification by mail by Oct. 31. Selected awardees must complete the process by March 31, 2026, or they will forfeit their spot. For more information call (307) 777-7531 or email wdhhearingaid@wyo.gov.
