WYOMING — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) shared a warning on its social media channels on Friday, May 9, alerting locals to a text scammer who has been posing as a WYDOT official.
The text scam states that legal action will be enforced after Sunday, May 11, if state toll fees are not paid.
“We are receiving reports of texts similar to these, with reports that the link took folks to a spoofed version of our website,” WYDOT wrote via Facebook. “These texts are a SCAM.”
WYDOT wrote that Wyoming does not have toll roads, and that tolling authorities typically mail toll bills versus texting them.
“We will never text you unprompted, especially from a foreign number,” WYDOT said. “Also, note the URL in the text does not match our real website URL.”
WYDOT advises residents to delete the text and not to click/tap on any links. For those unsure if a text is scam, call WYDOT directly or go to the agency’s official website.
