JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Riverton office issued a Winter Storm Warning for Jackson Hole and northwestern Wyoming on Monday afternoon, March 4.

Heavy snow is expected in the area, to the tune of 6 to 10 inches in town and up to 20 inches in the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains between 5 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5, and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, according to the NWS. The heaviest snowfall should arrive between 2 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 a.m. on Wednesday, with rates potentially reaching one inch per hour in the mountains.

NWS forecasts that snow accumulation could top one foot near Teton Village and in the Teton Range’s foothills.

Wind speeds will also be a factor, with gusts of up to 30 mph possible in open areas, NWS said. In the mountains, that top speed could reach 45 mph.

“Travel could be difficult over Teton Pass during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes,” the warning said. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of emergency.”
