WYOMING — The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Riverton office issued a winter storm warning Tuesday afternoon, alerting northwestern Wyomingites to the potential for heavy snow in high elevations beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25.
NWS forecasts total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches for elevations above 7,000 feet, and 10 to 20 inches for elevations above 8,000 feet.
“Isolated areas with higher amounts are possible,” the warning said. “Winds could gust as high as 50 mph.”
Affected areas are expected to include much of Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, the Absaroka Mountains and the Gros Ventre Mountains. The warning is in effect through 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26.
NWS also warns that the weather will impact travel over Teton Pass and Togwotee Pass, citing blowing snow as a “significant” problem for visibility. Those who must travel over the passes are encouraged to bring food, water and flashlights in their vehicles in case of emergency.
