JACKSON, Wyo. — A new Western heritage-themed mural is coming to the Teton County Fair and Fairgrounds, and Jackson Hole Public Art is seeking an artist to conceptualize and complete the project.

The call for artists offers a $10,000 commission for the winning painter. The mural will be 68 by 20 feet and reside inside of the Fairgrounds Community Building.

One to three artists will be hired to design the mural, with one artist selected for the final commission. The mural’s imagery will focus on the Western way of life, which might include: mountain men and fur trapping, wildlife, animal husbandry, horseback training, riding and showing, outfitting, hunting and traditional homemaking activities like quilting, sewing, baking, gardening and canning.

Interested artists are invited to submit a proposal to JH Public Art by Nov. 15. Applicants must be located in Wyoming, and artists with mural painting experience might be given preference. They will need to supply a one-page letter of interest describing past work, a resume, references and photos. A panel of local judges will assess the applicants.

The piece is expected to be painted between January and March 2024.
