JACKSON, Wyo. — the 2022 Wyoming primary election was on Aug. 16. Statewide, 182,142 ballots were cast, the most ever in a primary according to data from the Secretary of State website going back to 1978.
A total of 8,491 ballots were cast in Teton County for the primary election. On election day 4,409 votes were cast at the polls, 808 ballots were absentee and 3,274 were early absentee, according to the unofficial results report released by Teton County.
The majority of local ballots—7,978 were cast for the Republican primary while 481 ballots were cast in the Democratic primary.
Democratic candidates running in contested races picked up only a few hundred votes. House District 23 candidate, Liz Storer was able to win her ticket to the primary with 168 votes beating Ryan Sedgeley’s 53 votes. Storer will go against Republican Paul Vogelheim.
Anne Comeaux Sutton beat Brian E. Hultman’s 152 votes with 279, securing herself a second term as Clerk of District Court. Similarly, Melissa Shinkle won the county assessor seat with 337 votes to Zane Aukee’s 88 votes. Comeaux and Shinkle do not face Republican contenders in the general election.
In a historically democratic county, the data suggests party switching. As of July 1, 5,768 Teton County residents were registered Democrats and 5,968 were registered Republicans. By primary election day, just 481 ballots were cast in the Democratic primary in Teton County.
There are 287,014 registered Wyoming voters as of Aug. 16. Teton County accounts for 15,586 of those registered voters.
