JACKSON, Wyo. — Tomorrow, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation that created the federal holiday on June 1, 1954. From then on, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
The holiday ties back to the end of World War I and marks when Germany and the Allies signed a 1918 agreement to end war hostilities. Fighting ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Town Hall offices will be closed and will reopen on Monday, Nov. 14 at 8 a.m. Both the Trash Transfer Station and Recycling Center will also be closed tomorrow.
Additionally, entrance fees will be waived tomorrow for military veterans at Wyoming State Parks as part of “Parks for Patriots” programming.
All veterans with proof of their veteran status can enter any Wyoming State Park and/or Historic Site free of charge. This applies to day-use fees only. All other fees, such as overnight camping, must still be paid.
Veterans eligible for the free entrance are defined as: a person who served in active military, naval, or air service and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. This does not include active-duty military personnel.
The Town of Jackson will host its 3rd Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Jackson’s Town Square which will be followed by the Third Annual Veterans Day Walk/Ruck/Run.
The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and then participants can begin a 11.11 mile walk, ruck march or run through Jackson. Event participation is free and open to the public.
