Vehicle registration fees double beginning next week Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Motorists will be paying more to register their vehicles and trailers beginning tomorrow. State fees were increased—mostly doubled across the board—with new legislation passed at the last session of state business in Cheyenne.

The increase will offset in part a portion of $25 million lost by WYDOT in state general funding as voted in the last budget session. WYDOT received those funds each fiscal year to maintain and operate the state roadways and bridges.

“With WYDOT no longer receiving any general funds from the state, the fee increases will be used to maintain a safe, high-quality and efficient transportation system to the traveling public,” said WYDOT director Bill Panos.

“State lawmakers last increased the state portion of vehicle registration fees in 1975,” Panos said.

Fees for driver licenses are also increasing—from $20 to $40. It marks the first time that’s happened in 24 years.

“The last time there was an increase was in 1993,” Panos said. “Previously, the fees collected covered 40 percent of the costs of producing a driver’s license. The increases will now cover 80 percent of the costs.”

The county treasurer has been blitzed all day with motorists looking to take advantage of savings. Regardless of when your tags expire, renewing them today and paying today will get you in on today’s rates. Beginning Monday, July 3, the new fees go into effect.
