MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — Yellowstone National Park (YNP) announced on Wednesday, August 28 that the Madison and Gibbon rivers are now open to fishing after the park had closed a number of waterways due to high temperatures.

“The park has lifted the fishing closures on these rivers and their associated tributaries due to cooler water temperatures,” YNP said in the announcement.

The Firehole River, being strongly influenced by geothermal features, is now open to fishing with partial restrictions. The river and its associated tributaries will be closed to fishing daily from 2 p.m. to sunrise the following day, pending weather conditions. Park staff will continue to monitor the Firehole River and its tributaries.

On July 15, the Madison River, Gibbon and Firehole Rivers closed to fishing activities due to warm water temperatures and low river flows. Then later on July 26, several other YNP waterways opened with restrictions to protect the park’s trout. According to YNP, warm conditions are “extremely stressful” for the park’s resident fish, and can be fatal.
