JACKSON, Wyo. — Teton County and Jackson are working together to create a Safe Streets for All Safety Action (SS4A) Plan, which will layout a roadmap for safer and more connected streets and pathways in the valley.
According to the Town, a multi-year planning effort will identify transportation investments, and projects that benefit all travelers. Safety data and community perspectives, such as where do people feel comfortable walking and biking with kids, and the efficiency of sidewalks, will help create the Safety Action Plan. When complete, the Plan will include a safety analysis, road design revisions, development standard updates and a refined mobility network.
“Our community deserves safe streets so everyone can get around with comfort and ease no matter their age, ability or what mode of travel they choose,” the Town stated in the announcement.
Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) data shows that total crashes in Teton County, including state highways, have increased by about 12% post-pandemic (in 2021 and 2022) compared to pre-pandemic (in 2018 and 2019). Additionally, 92 people have been seriously injured and 24 people have lost their lives on roadways in Teton County between 2013 and 2022.
“These numbers show that transportation safety is a real concern in our community and that we must act now to prevent future incidents,” the Town’s announcement states. “We are setting the goal of zero traffic deaths and severe injuries on our community’s roadways, because even one death is too many. The SS4A project team will work to develop a plan to eliminate traffic deaths, and make streets and pathways welcoming for people of all ages and abilities.”
The Safety Action Plan planning process began in February 2024 and will conclude in early 2025. The project’s survey is available until April 22.
