Jackson, Wyo. — On Monday, Oct. 21, Town Council unanimously approved the first reading of an update to Title 12, Streets and Other Public Places, in its effort to enforce stricter e-bike laws.

Town Councilors directed staff to write a report focused on pathway and e-bike safety on Sept. 9. The current e-bike code states that pathway users are to adjust their speed in response to snow, ice, traffic and animals. The new code will state with clarity that “no person shall operate a device on a pathway at a greater speed than the posted limit,” according to Town.

The Town is currently establishing the e-bike speed limit, which will eventually be posted on signs along the pathways.

On Aug. 5, Executive Director of Friends of Pathways (FOP) Katherine Dowson presented Town Council with a letter requesting the enforcement of a 15-mph speed limit with selected 10-mph slow zones on Town of Jackson pathways.

“There is still a significant number of people traveling too fast on the pathways,” Dowson wrote in the letter.

According to the staff report, stricter enforcement will better assist the Jackson Police Department and Municipal Judge’s Office in processing pathway citations for those riding too fast.

Town Council will conduct two more readings of this e-bike draft ordinance before passing it into law.
