JACKSON, Wyo. — The Town of Jackson (TOJ) has issued a reminder to help keep snow plowing season running smoothly.

According to TOJ, the Public Works Department and Teton County’s Parks and Rec. Department were working around the clock earlier this winter to handle snowstorms; the recent lull in storms has given the plowing teams time to relocate snow to the fairgrounds. But winter is far from over.

TOJ is requesting that the public help plow crews by taking the following steps to keep streets and sidewalks safe and clear:

  • Keep trash cans off of streets and sidewalks until 7 a.m., or close to whenever trash is scheduled to be picked up. Trash cans left out the night before pick-up force plow drivers to either maneuver around cans or get out and move them, slowing down plowing.
  • Pitch in and shovel sidewalks to keep walking routes clear.
  • “Adopt” a fire hydrant by shoveling around a hydrant in the neighborhood to keep it clear for potential emergencies.
  • Give active plows plenty of space. Winter street equipment is much larger than other vehicles, and operators cannot always see what is on the ground near them. They can move erratically.
  • Do not park on Town streets between 3 and 7 a.m.

In the event of multiple consecutive days of snowfall, TOJ said it would prioritize main thoroughfares over alleys and parking lots. Routes to the schools and sidewalks in the town core are also plowed before other areas.
