JACKSON, Wyo. — With bears now on the move in the valley, Town Council approved a contract award to Compumetric Engineering on Monday, May 5, for the purchase of bear-resistant trash cans to replace older models downtown.
On April 7, Council voted to reject all bids received for bear-resistant trash containers and approved the release of a new bid request for bear-resistant trash cans. The staff notes state that the revised request required that trash containers have top loading pull down chutes that can be operated with a closed fist or while wearing mittens, are ADA compliant, include a warranty of 1 year or greater and fit 40-gallon trash cans.
According to Town Council, the bid provided by Compumetric Engineering fulfilled the needed bear-resistant specifications and provide a “superior design.” The cost, including shipping, for 44 single bins, seven double bins and six triple bins is $79,229.
One of the goals of the Town Sustainability Plan is to ensure that 100% of Town-owned trash containers will be bear-resistant by 2026.
Public Works staff are anticipated to install the new cans this spring and summer.
