JACKSON, Wyo. — In observance of National Preparedness Month, Teton County Emergency Management is reminding residents to be prepared for emergencies.

“Everyone faces risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face,” the agency’s press release says. “In addition, each person has specific needs after a disaster that will affect their ability to recover. Thankfully,
some planning and low-cost actions taken now can improve disaster resilience.”

The agency shared the following advice for making arrangements ahead of the critical moments:

  • Identify the resources you use on a daily basis and what you might do if those resources are limited or not available. These resources could be medical, food, shelter or transportation based.
  • Assemble disaster supply kits for your home and vehicle. Remember to include contact information for important people and care providers. Put in a list of medicines you need, dosage instructions and any allergies. View a sample checklist at hls.wyo.gov/being-prepared/two-weeks-ready.
  • If you use medical equipment in your home that requires electricity to operate, talk to your health care provider about what you can do to prepare for its use during a power outage.

The County also suggests getting set up to receive emergency alerts and information.

  • Sign up for free Nixle text alerts from local authorities by texting “TETON_WY” to 888777.
  • Consider purchasing a NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio with an automatic alerting feature.
  • Bookmark the website tcincident.org, which provides information about current incidents in the county and what to do.
