JACKSON, WY – For the second year in a row, Teton County has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Teton County is the only county in Wyoming to receive the award.
“It’s a significant achievement for our county,” said Teton County Treasurer Katie Smits. “With the help of Teton County Clerk Sherry Daigle and Teton County Administrator Alyssa Watkins, the Treasurer’s Office created the budget document, and was ultimately rewarded for our efforts.”
The budget document is reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and by outside reviewers with experience in public-sector budgeting. A Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is only given if the document receives a “proficient” or “outstanding” rating based on nationally recognized guidelines for how well the budget served policy documents, financial plans, operational guides and communication devices.
“A lot of time and effort goes into creating this document,” Smits said. “When people have questions about revenues, expense or want more in-depth knowledge about the budget, I always lead them to this document.”
The GFOA, based in Chicago, is a major professional association providing top-quality publications, training programs, services and products designed to enhance the skills and performances of those responsible for government finance policy and management.
“They have many ‘best practices’ that are used by Teton County as a guideline for policies and procedures,” Smits said.
The GFOA says that award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments in the country.
Teton County has received the award since it started applying in 2017.
