JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) shared a warning to its social media channels on Wednesday alerting locals to a phone scammer who has been posing as a TCSO lieutenant to target Teton County residents.
“A current phone scammer is sending Teton County residents a text message about a missed subpoena notice and a warrant for their arrest with a $25,000 bond,” TCSO said via Facebook. “The scammer is using Lt. Aitken’s name and our current address of 180 S King Street. This is a scam!”
The sheriff’s office also shared tips for sussing out phone scammers.
“Remember: Phone scammers can be very convincing,” TCSO said in the post. “They use intimidation tactics to scare you into quickly sharing personal and financial information. They will pressure you to send them money through payment apps or gift card numbers.”
The agency reminds the community that TCSO will never contact people by phone or text to collect money or financial information, nor will they every ask people to pay fines via Venmo, PayPal or gift cards.
Those with questions about a scam call or text should call TCSO dispatch at (307) 733-2331.
