WILSON, Wyo. — Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) was mobilized Sunday afternoon to assist an injured male on Mount Glory.
According to posts on TCSAR’s social media accounts, the 70-year-old man from Idaho Falls, Idaho, was partway up the trail when he suffered a knee injury that rendered him immobile. Twenty TCSAR volunteers worked together to retrieve the man and his companion from the mountain in a rescue that took just shy of four hours.
Volunteers hiked up the trail from the Teton Pass summit, carrying water and a rescue tool called a wheeled litter, which utilizes a bicycle tire and disc brakes.
They found the injured man around 3 p.m., about one hour after the emergency call, and administered first aid. To transport him down the steep trail, volunteers used a rope belay in addition to the wheeled litter. The party arrived back at the trailhead’s parking lot about an hour after finding the patient. He declined an ambulance ride, seeking medical treatment on his own.
Even though the man and his companion “were fit and had experience in the backcountry,” TSCAR said, “hot temperatures on the south-facing slope, little shade and the steep, loose trail made for challenging conditions.”
TCSAR has had a busy year. The recently released Midyear Rescue Report mentions 50 rescues involving 74 patients between Dec. 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023.
