JACKSON, Wyo. — In a coordinated effort on Monday, Lincoln County and Teton County Search and Rescue volunteers rescued a woman who became lost in thick timber after taking her two horses out for a day trip in the Dog Creek Area of the Snake River Canyon.
Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) says that the woman who is in her early 50s, called her husband and reported that her GPS was leading her in the wrong direction. Although she had cell service, she had no headlamp and only a light jacket, and was therefore unprepared to spend the night in the backcountry.
The husband called Teton County Dispatch at about 7:30 p.m. which then alerted TCSAR. The woman also placed a 911 call, which was picked up by Lincoln County Dispatch. TCSAR began coordinating with Lincoln County SAR and ultimately took the mission since the Teton County team would be able to reach the lost subject faster via Little Dog Creek. Meanwhile the woman informed TCSAR that she would stay put until help arrived.
TCSAR volunteers responded to the trailhead and began hiking at 9:30 p.m. At 11:53 p.m., the woman reported that she could hear voices yelling for her. At 12:12 a.m. they made voice contact. At 12:18, SAR members reached the patient, off-trail about 6.4 miles from the trailhead. She was uninjured and ok to ride out on her horse. The teams led her and the two horses out of the field, reaching the trailhead at 4:23 a.m. Afterward, TCSAR volunteers returned to the hangar, completing the mission in 10 hours, 26 minutes.
