JACKSON, Wyo. — As winter approaches, Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) volunteers have been training with their emergency helicopters to prepare for the upcoming season.
In the coming months, the likelihood of helicopter rescues increases, and TCSAR has reminded the public that it is crucial to know how to act in the event of an emergency helicopter flying overhead.
“If you do need help, hold both arms up as if forming a ‘Y’,”said TCSAR. “If you don’t need help, lift one arm up while extending the other one down (like a kid playing airplane). Do not ever wave at a helicopter if you don’t need help.”
As outdoor enthusiasts begin their winter adventures, brushing up on backcountry rescue knowledge allows search and rescue teams to operate with fewer false alarms.
“Knowing these signals really helps our team respond more efficiently,” said TCSAR.
