JACKSON, Wyo. — Looking for a creative outlet this winter? Try a crochet project from the National Park Service (NPS).
NPS shared four crochet patterns earlier this week, highlighting four different animal species found in various national parks and NPS sites across the country. For those interested in replicating a local critter, check out the crochet pattern for the cutest stuffed beaver.
“Whether you’re crafting a quirky keepsake, ocean-inspired decor, or just fishin’ for a new project, these easy-to-medium patterns are perfect for beginners and wildlife fans alike,” NPS wrote on Facebook.
According to NPS, the beaver is a keystone species, which means that other species in the ecosystem largely depend on them, and if they were removed, the ecosystem would change drastically. Beavers affect habitat structure and dynamics through damming and diverting streams. The ponds and flooding that develop are a favorable environment for willow and aspen trees.
Beavers can be found in Grand Teton National Park, in spots like Oxbow Bend and Schwabacher Landing, as well as in Yellowstone National Park near Willow Park and the Gallatin River along US191.
The National Institutes of Health says there is some evidence that arts and crafts can have short-term benefits for mental health, including improvements in anxiety, stress, self-esteem and self-efficacy. Projects like this are a great opportunity to get together with friends and create some adorable plushies. Those looking for a social place to crochet and get some advice on a project can attend Knit on Pearl’s free “Knit Night” on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.
