PINEDALE, Wyo. — Earlier this month, the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to a report of human remains discovered by hunters near the Sweetwater Gap Guard Station at the south end of the Wind River Mountain Range.
On Sept. 6, deputies and detectives located disarticulated skeletal remains along with a tent and personal items in a remote area near Sweetwater Gap. Preliminary findings suggest that the remains have been there for approximately five years and belong to an adult male.
According to a press release from SCSO sent on Sept. 17, an identification card was located at the scene, however the remains have not yet been positively identified. Foul play does not seem to be a factor, but the cause of death has not been determined. SCSO also said that no missing person reports have matched the remains or the location.
Anyone who has visited the Sweetwater Gap area in recent years and may have come across bones, camping gear or other personal items is encouraged to email Detective Hana Patterson or Detective Sergeant Travis Lanning.
