Strictest and most lenient states toward speeding Buckrail - Jackson Hole, news

WYOMING – As summer gets into full swing, many of us will be hitting the road, especially with gas prices fairly low. Buckrail found this handy tip sheet from WalletHub on the strictest and most lenient states when it comes to speeding.

Old Montana speed limit sign pre-1999.

Some of the findings were surprising and revealing.

For instance, our neighbors to the north who are still perceived as a live and let drive state are, indeed, fairly lenient. For decades, Montana had no posted speed limit on many state and interstate highways. A speed “reasonable and prudent” was the only stipulation. That all changed in 1998 after the state supreme court struck that down as “unconstitutionally vague.”

Montana still tolerates fast driving, coming in at 43rd strictest. But the Big Sky State appears to be the exception in the Rocky Mountain West. Wyoming checked in at a three-way tie for 17th strictest. Colorado was #2, followed by Arizona and New Mexico tied for 3rd.

Some of the toughest states on speeding are Delaware (#1), California (#5), and Virginia (#8). Lead foots in Texas don’t have to worry too much, that state has dust gathering on its radar guns, ranking most lenient state toward speeding.
