Stowe will be a good test for high-flying Moose

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Jackson Hole Moose are back in action this weekend as they tangle with the Stowe Slugs. This will be a big test for the Moose.

The Slugs are one of the more competitive teams the Moose see in nonleague play. They have won the championship of the Catamount Elite Hockey League for the past three years.

Stowe plays in a non-check league but the Slugs figured out their hitting game pretty quickly last year during their visit to the Snow King Sports and Event Center. Led by Graham Mink (who reportedly will not be making this trip), James Caldwell, and John Flint, the Slugs bring plenty of firepower. The Moose beat Stowe last season in two close games: 6-5 and 3-2.

The Moose will be without star forward Drew Akins. After suffering a concussion earlier this season, Akins missed last week with an unrelated upper body injury that might keep him out for the rest of the season. Coach Howie Carruth said he hopes to have him back for the BDHL playoffs on March 8-9 but it will be iffy.

Mobile defenseman Brad Improta is getting closer to return. Carruth said he’ll probably need another week off or two just to be safe. Hardnosed forward Miller Resor will be back in the lineup this weekend.

Former Moose player Luke Sisler now plays for the Slugs. He penned a great article on what it was like to return to Jackson to face his old team last year. It really captures the whole hockey scene in Jackson, especially if you’ve never gone to a game.

Music by Bush Pilots. Doors 7pm, puck drops 7:30pm Friday and Saturday night.
