JACKSON, WY— “What is this, amateur hour?”
You bet it is, but that’s what makes the Picas Margarita Cup so fun. Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club’s 10th annual Marg Cup kicks off January 14, and anyone and everyone is welcome to participate. You certainly don’t have to be a racer—and in fact, the scoring system gives amateur racers a chance to score big.
Here’s how it works: teams of five or six racers can register as a self-sponsored team or a business-sponsored team by January 14. The “Business Class” provides a friendly arena for local businesses to compete against one another while supporting a great cause (it’s a $700 entry fee, but every penny directly supports JHSC and its 500 local student-athletes). Then, every other Monday from January 14-March 4, teams race in five different events: Dual GS, Giant Slalom, Super G, Giant Slalom again, and Dual GS.
It’s equal parts fun, social, and competitive. The race courses are professional, but the racers certainly don’t have to be. The race is open to both skiers and snowboarders, including telemark skiers—they’ve even seen snow bikes and snowblades. And the scoring is designed to give even novice racers a chance to score high and help their team win.
And to make it a little sweeter, true to its name, the Marg Cup will serve Pica’s margaritas and tacos every race. Margarita Mondays are back. Plus, JHSC will dole out HUGE raffle prizes at each event.
Self-sponsored teams can register for $500 until January 9. Registration prices go up 10% from January 10-14, and 15% January 14 (starting day).
Why sponsor a Marg Cup team?
It’s a great way to create camaraderie among staff, encourage friendly competition between local businesses, and support the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, Jackson’s oldest nonprofit. Plus, a sponsorship gets your business direct exposure to 200+ participants and spectators per race via announcements and signage. Your business team will be recognized on the race timing website, which is used internationally for races up to the highest level of competition, on JHSkiClub.org, and series-wide emails.
The winning business team will be recognized at the season awards ceremony, and each business team gets Marg Cup gear and one Jonathan Selkowitz image for promotion.
Self-sponsored team champions will win $1500 in Stio credit, plus swag. Business-sponsored teams are eligible for all that PLUS custom Champion Margarita Cups that live at Pica’s for a year, your team name engraved on a plaque mounted permanently at Pica’s, and free margaritas. ALL racers will get an annual league souvenir.
