WYOMING — Get ready to meet a lot of kids named Henry.

The Wyoming Department of Health’s Vital Statistics Services shared the most popular baby names in the state for 2023 on Tuesday, with Evelyn winning for baby girls and Henry winning for baby boys.

Evelyn topped Amelia, Olivia, Harper, Charlotte, Hazel, Eleanor, Lainey, Oakley and Aurora, the other top-10 most popular names for girls. Henry was followed by Jack and Wyatt, a tie for second-most popular, in addition to Elijah, Carter, Asher, Theodore, Benjamin, Waylon and Noah.

“There was more of a shakeup among the top names last year than we typically see,” Kyndra Herrera, VSS deputy state registrar with WDH, said via press release.

Also included in the announcement were statewide birth statistics: Wyoming resident mothers recorded 5,989 births in 2023, down from 2022’s 6,050. Herrera noted that Wyoming’s birth numbers have trended downward over the past “several years.” The busiest month was August with 553 resident births, and the slowest was February with 449. She also pointed out that the number of births in 2023 exceeded the number of deaths that year, which was 5,566.

Herrera shared that 5,337 of those 5,989 recorded births occurred in the state of Wyoming, suggesting that some expectant Wyomingites traveled out of state to give birth.

“We believe this indicates many of our state’s mothers deliver their babies in hospitals in other locations, which can be due to geographic convenience, preference or medical need,” Herrera said.
