JACKSON, Wyo. ā Once in a while a band sound comes along that ruffles my ears with the sweetest of curveballs. In the case of Red Clay Strays, it started with the singular quivering voice of Brandon Coleman, solidified further by a band with fiery precision. If gospel-soul and rock nā roll always sounded this well together, popular music would be changed forever. Better yet, Red Clay Strays will be performing in the inviting new courtyard space of The Virginian Lodge this Sunday.
While the Red Clay Strays have only one full length album, Moment of Truth (2022), the slow burn has been built from touring over the last six or so years with numerous singles. With a sound as classic as the crackling of a Sun Records vinyl still spinning somewhere in Memphis, yet somehow more fresh and eclectic than simply labeling it āAmericana,ā the quintet is reminiscent of the vibrant heyday of southern musicāclassic country, rockabilly, gospel, soul, and rock. Born and bred in the red dirt clay of south Alabama, Coleman (lead vocals/guitar) is joined by Drew Nix (vocals/electric guitar/harmonica), Zach Rishel (electric guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass) and John Hall (drums).
But wait; donāt miss the opening acts. Virginian Saloon favorites Danno Simpson and Wyoming native Jordan Smith will play respective sets. These two fellas have the songwriting goods, and a perfect compliment for easing into this free community concert.
