JACKSON, Wyo. — Humans aren’t the only species getting together this holiday season.
Buckrail photographer Nick Sulzer spotted a herd of moose out and about earlier this week. Five bull moose were dining on frigid shrubs together.

Moose sightings are on the rise as valley temperatures decline. These ungulates are gearing up for winter, their favorite season. They’ve evolved to thrive in deep snow, with adaptations including long legs for efficient movement and a highly developed sense of smell to find shrubs hidden under the snow.

Moose haven’t always been present in Jackson. They expanded their range from Montana in the early 20th Century.

Visitors and community members can most effectively help support the current moose population by giving wildlife a brake, keeping dogs on a leash, giving moose at least 25 yards of space and never feeding moose or giving them access to foods in yards.
