JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club’s (JHSC) staff and board of directors announced the cancellation of this year’s Ski Swap due to concerns surrounding the spread of COVID. The event was to have taken place October 17.
The Ski Swap has served as a community service event and a fundraiser for the JHSC for many decades. In recent years, the event has drawn some 5,500 attendees during the one-day sale. The Ski Swap offers an opportunity for community members to both buy and sell new and used gear. It has become popular with a wide spectrum of shoppers due to the variety of winter-sports gear available at affordable prices, including entry- to professional-level equipment.
“This is a truly gut-wrenching decision to make,” said Jeff Moran, JHSC’s chief marketing officer. “We’ve been working with Teton County Public Health and other partners to create a safe and responsible event plan, but when our team stopped to consider all possible outcomes, we realized the safety of our community has to outweigh the fundraiser.”
The cancelation of the 2020 Ski Swap is another blow to the JHSC following the cancellations of their two major spring fundraising events: the newly redesigned Jackson Hole Downhill (Downhill) and the Rendezvous River Sports Karen Oatey Pole Pedal Paddle (PPP), both because of COVID-19.
Due to the nature of the Downhill and PPP being athletic events with smaller attendance than the Swap, the JHSC is confident both races will take place this winter with some modifications for COVID-19 safety. The Downhill is March 12-14, 2021. PPP is April 10, 2021.
“Although this is a fundraising loss for the club, the health and safety of our stakeholders and community supporters must come first,” said Ali Sehnert, JHSC executive director.
