JACKSON, WY— More than 90 percent of the American population has experienced, or will experience, trauma at some point in their lives.
Military veterans know this well, and know the sometimes devastating affects of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But across the country, an increasing number of veterans are working to address PTSD with a simple remedy: time outside.
Only fitting, then, that SHIFT 2018 should dedicate an entire evening of film to explore the healing relationship between nature and trauma (need we remind you that the theme of SHIFT 2018 is SHIFTrx: Public Lands and Public Health). Don’t miss SHIFT’s “The Pointy End of the Spear” film program Wednesday, October 17 in the Pink Garter Theater.
Presented by the TKF Foundation and MC’d by Hawah Kasat, this evening film program showcases what 90 percent of America’s population dealing with trauma can learn from the experiences of these veterans. The evening will feature seven short films, each telling a unique story of human suffering eased by the natural world.
One such film is Jim Ritterhoff’s “Mercy, Love & Grace: The Story of Force Blue.” In this story, the relationship between trauma and nature is symbiotic: a group of some of the countries most decorated Special Operations veteran work through their own traumas while working to heal the world’s coral reefs. Ritterhoff is a SHIFT Official Award Selection, and will present his film in person Wednesday night. Check out this feature on CBS News for a preview of the incredible work FORCE BLUE is doing:
