JACKSON HOLE, WYO – A petition is circulating calling for a referendum challenging zoning recently approved for town neighborhoods known as Districts 3-6. The effort to challenge the new ordinance allowing for more density in certain parts of town is being led by Judd Grossman, an east Jackson resident and candidate for town council.
For Grossman, it’s more than a campaign issue. It’s personal. He lives in a district slated for increased density Grossman believes is not appropriate for his neighborhood. And he believes he’s not alone in wanting the town to walk back the new zoning regs.
“This zoning update is a big deal. It alters the course of development for most of the Town of Jackson. Jackson is already estimated to double in density at buildout. The new zoning brings even more development potential into town,” Grossman said. “Before we add the potential for thousands of more residents and cars to impact our beloved neighborhoods I think it’s important that citizens take advantage of their right to give this ordinance a thumbs up or thumbs down through the referendum process.”
The ordinance (1197) was approved by the town at third reading on July 16 and published on July 18. For a referendum to be successful it must have verified signatures of at least 10% of the registered voters currently residing in town. The petition will have to be turned into the municipal clerk’s office within 20 days of published ordinance.
This marks the second time the town has been challenged with a referendum on its zoning updates. A referendum launched by Save Historic Jackson Hole was used successfully in 2016 to repeal additional commercial allowances in District 2.
