Pokes will start freshman QB in bowl game today

WYOMING – Game day is here for the Wyoming Cowboys as they face the Georgia State Panthers in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl today in Tucson.

In a surprise move, head coach Craig Bohl announced on Monday his starting quarterback for the big game will be true freshman Levi Williams. Bohl kept the decision secret until yesterday. The 6’5” Texas native was chosen over Tyler Vander Waal, who battled with Sean Chambers for the job last season, and took over the reins when Chambers was hurt earlier this year.

But Bohl likes his chances with Williams, who’s been slotted in during different situations in the final two Pokes games. He’s played well and coach Bohl likes the maturity and confidence he sees in the 3-star recruit who fortuitously fell into the lap of the football program in Laramie after a last-minute coaching change in Houston, where he had committed, left Williams out in the cold.

Game time is 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 31. It will be carried by CBS-TV and many radio networks.
