JACKSON, Wyo. — The Nelson Drive Trailhead area and adjacent trails will be closed temporarily while Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) works on improvements to the parking area.

According to a press release, the trailhead will be closed from Monday, Aug. 25, through Friday, Sept. 5. The project includes regrading the existing road surface to address chronic erosion and drainage issues.

The statement says that the work will be completed in order to “reconstruct the existing parking area into a more efficient and sustainable design that better accommodates visitors and protects soil, plant and water resources.”

The trails that will be affected by the closure include: Nelson Knoll Loop, Water Tank Road, lower Putt Putt, lower Woods Canyon and Crystal Lite. Select trails will still be accessible above the closure area from the Cache Creek Trailhead, including Putt Putt, Woods Canyon and Crystal Butte.

Pedestrians will still be able to access Putt Putt and Woods Canyon trails from the Henley Access Trail off Nelson Drive, but those planning to park a vehicle must use the Cache Creek Trailhead.

While the trailhead area is closed, technicians are planning to gather geotechnical information adjacent to existing Forest Service housing units that will help inform future housing plans.
