WYOMING — Yellowstone National Park officials are warning the public about aggressive elk as they near their calving season.

Across Wyoming, cow elk will be much more territorial and may run towards individuals or kick.

The best way to avoid a conflict is to stay alert, says the park.

“Look around corners before exiting buildings or walking around blind spots: cow elk may bed their calves near buildings and under cars,” said the park.

Aways keep at least 25 yards (23 m) from elk. In the case that an elk run towards you, find shelter in your vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible. Attacks can be unprovoked and unpredictable.
