CARIBOU-TARGHEE NATIONAL FOREST — Caribou-Targhee National Forest’s (CTNF) Palisades Ranger District has announced that it will conduct a 10-acre broadcast burn this weekend before a winter storm arrives on Sunday.
According to the CTNF’s Facebook post, these 10 acres are part of a plan to burn roughly 500 acres over the next several years to improve winter range for deer, elk and other wildlife. These burns will decrease juniper and conifer densities, which will stimulate growth for shrubs and forbs that make up foragers’ winter diets.
The 10-acre burn will be located east of Swan Valley, three miles down Rainey Creek Road near South Rainey Creek trailhead. The public will still be able to access the road as far as the easternmost dispersed camping area.
Temporary closures might end up impacting South Rainey Creek trailhead, Road Canyon Trail and Rainey Creek Trail.
