YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Sometimes, around this time of year in Wyoming, Old Man Winter acts like he isn’t quite ready to leave.
Yellowstone National Park (YNP) announced that Wyoming’s section of the Beartooth Highway will face a delayed opening due to a winter storm. The segment of US212, between the junction of WY296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway) and the Montana state line, was originally scheduled to open Friday, May 22. The recent snowfall has forced the closure to remain in effect for at least one more day. The stretch of highway is now scheduled to open Saturday, May 23, if conditions allow.
“Yellowstone road crews are clearing heavy drifts of snow across the road,” YNP wrote in a press release. “Crews, in coordination with Montana teams, will continue to monitor weather, reevaluate conditions on Friday, and open the road as soon as it is practical and safe for travel.”
Once the road is open, travel restrictions and closures could occur without notice at any time deemed necessary.
“Prepare for winter driving conditions, have flexible travel plans, and watch for quickly changing weather conditions,” the park wrote.
