JACKSON, Wyo. — The clock is ticking and Jackson’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, operating out of Teton County Library, has both good and bad news for those who have yet to file their taxes.
The good news is that VITA still has appointments available Tuesday 12 to 3 p.m., Wednesday 2:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., for new returns and to sign completed returns.
Additionally, e-filed returns are being processed quickly, with most refunds being deposited within three weeks.
The bad news is that the program expects to be very busy in the next two weeks, with Saturday, April 9, being the last day to take in new returns (April 12-14 will be limited to the signing of completed returns).
VITA’s fastest steps to free tax preparation:
Step One: Pick up a tax prep packet. Packets are available in the library lobby, or to download at tclib.org/tax (for English) or tclib.org/impuesto (for Spanish).
Step Two: Homework. Follow directions in tax prep packet to complete forms and gather tax documents, then make a Drop-Off appointment at our websites (above).
Step Three: Drop-Off appointment. Come to the library auditorium. You’ll meet briefly with a VITA volunteer, then leave your paperwork to be processed. Volunteers may call you with questions during tax preparation.
Step Four: Review/Sign appointment. VITA contacts you when your taxes are completed, and you again make a Review/Sign appointment at our website and come to the library auditorium to review and sign your return.
Step Five: VITA e-files your taxes. Tax returns must be e-filed or postmarked by Monday, April 18, at 12 midnight, however, VITA’s last day is April 14.
Spanish speakers who need interpreters or extra help obtaining ITIN numbers may make appointments Wednesday 4-7:30 p.m. or Saturday 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Those who cannot make appointments will be accommodated as walk-ups, with the best time to come without appointments being later in the sessions (appointments fill up the first half of sessions, meaning longer wait times for walk-ups).
