JACKSON, Wyo. — November always seems like that time of year when the mud rules all. Here are a few tips that can make the cleanup process a little less maddening and stress-free:

  • Before you yell a line of expletives when your child or dog comes running into the house tracking mud with every step, take a few deep breaths and momentarily be one with nature. Plus, giving that mud some time to dry will ensure an easier and quicker cleanup for you.
  • Mud on tile is one thing, but mud on carpet — an entirely different beast. Let the mud completely dry and then vacuum. Mix a few drops of dish detergent with a cup of warm water and using a clean cloth, blot the mud stains until they are removed.
  • If you are already cleaning the mud off the carpet, why not go one step further and deodorize it at the same time? Add eight drops of lavender essential oil to one half cup baking soda, sprinkle over the carpet, take a few more deep breaths and vacuum.
  • As temps drop and you fire up those baseboard heaters for the first time, minimize the stench by thoroughly cleaning beforehand. In a spray bottle, mix ten drops of peppermint essential oil with one cup of water. Lightly dampen a cloth with the peppermint mixture and wipe down all surfaces on the baseboard heater. You can use a soft paintbrush to clean the fins.
