VICTOR, Idaho — ZiMBiRA’s music has been described as “feels good music.” Led by award-winning Zimbabwean multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Zivanai Masango, this band will take listeners on a musical journey to southern Africa that will leave everyone uplifted and beaming with joy.
Rooted in the rhythms as well as cultural and musical traditions of Zimbabwe and southern Africa, the beautifully polyrhythmic music of ZiMBiRA will make listeners want to celebrate life. Masango, a Zimbabwean-born virtuoso, weaves an enchanting tapestry of sound that transcends cultural boundaries.
Born and raised in Harare, Masango’s musical journey began at a young age when, drawn to the guitar’s expressive power, he picked up one and started to play. His early influences, steeped in the rich musical traditions of Zimbabwe, laid the foundation for his eclectic style. Masango’s passion for music led him to explore various genres, from traditional Zimbabwean music to jazz, blues, rock and beyond.
At the core of ZiMBiRA’s sound lies the traditional Zimbabwean instrument, the mbira, a thumb piano with ancient roots in Shona Culture. Band member Sevenzo’s virtuoso mbira playing serves as the heartbeat of the band, infusing their music with enchanting melodies that transport listeners to the African savannah. ZiMBiRA’s sonic landscape extends far beyond traditional boundaries, blending elements of reggae, jazz, funk and rock to create a truly unique and eclectic sound. With a lineup that includes guitars, bass, drums, saxophone and vocals, the band weaves together intricate layers of instrumentation to craft infectious grooves and soaring improvisations.
Since its formation, ZiMBiRA has captivated audiences around the globe with electrifying live performances that have earned the band a reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s most dynamic musical exports. Whether playing at intimate venues or international festivals, the band’s energy and irresistible rhythms never fail to get audiences on their feet and dancing to the beat.
Calle Mambo will start the party as this week’s opener.
