Morel ‘shroomin’ has rules, Bridger-Teton expects big turnout in last year’s burns

JACKSON HOLE, WYO — As reported earlier by Buckrail: Morels are in! We shared our tips, tricks, and etiquette for you, now here’s the scoop from the Forest Service.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is announcing the following guidelines for personal and commercial wild mushroom picking this year on the Forest. Following last summer’s Roosevelt wildfire, the Forest anticipates an influx of Morel mushroom harvesting for both commercial and personal users. Morel mushrooms are likely to appear in burned areas when spring conditions are just right. In order to reduce resource impacts and support all Forest users, Commercial Mushroom Harvest Areas have been designated within the Roosevelt fire boundary.

The Bridger-Teton will be hosting an open house for any members of public that have questions and are interested in more information. The open house will be held at the Bondurant Elementary School gymnasium, Tuesday May 14 from 6:00-7:30pm.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest would like to remind users to use caution when traveling in recently burned areas due to stump holes, snags, and loose soil or rocks. Also, users are reminded to make sure they know where mushroom harvesting is allowed, and be extra mindful of private property within the mushroom harvest areas.

Personal Use

Harvesters may gather up to 3 gallons of Morel mushrooms for personal use without a permit, free of charge. There is no age limit on personal use mushroom pickers. Personal use mushrooms may not be sold or bartered to another party.

Commercial Use

Commercial Mushroom permits will be available for purchase starting Wednesday, May 22. Each individual selling or bartering any mushrooms or gathering more than 3 gallons of mushrooms per day is required to have a valid Commercial Permit. All commercial mushroom harvesters must have a commercial permit in their possession while gathering and transporting mushrooms.

A 14-day commercial gathering permit costs $300 dollars. When purchasing a permit, commercial mushroom harvesters must present an acceptable form of identification such as a Birth Certificate, Green Card, State ID, Passport, Tribal ID, or other identification issued by a Federal or State Government.

Commercial pickers may camp only in the Commercial Mushroom Camping Area designated by the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Commercial mushroom permits will not be sold to anyone under the age of 18 years old. Violation of a commercial mushroom permit may result in fines and/or the termination of the permit.

Commercial mushroom permits will be available for purchase at the Big Piney, Pinedale, and Jackson Ranger Districts of the Bridger-Teton National Forest and will only be sold at those district offices during their regular business hours of 8a.m. to 4:30p.m. Commercial permits will not be available at local vendors.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is not issuing buying permits and buying stations will not be permitted to operate on Forest land.

“We want the public to enjoy this delicious seasonal treat, while at the same time managing the potential impacts of a larger commercial harvest event,” said Mary Cernicek, Bridger-Teton National Forest Public Affairs Officer. “Having a permit system that accommodates both personal use and commercial use allows us to do just that.”
