JACKSON, WY— The timeless expression “getting the band back together” has seldom been more relevant or more exciting.
All three members of The Chick Corea Akoustic Band have reunited for their first tour in more than 20 years, and they’re coming to Jackson Tuesday, August 21.
Jazz icon Chick Corea will be joined by his longtime brothers-in-music John Patitucci and Dave Weckl, bringing the whipshot runs and lyrical flights they pioneered in Chick’s Elektric Band to a classic acoustic piano trio. You can expect Chick’s signature boundless energy on piano and brilliant songwriting, John’s unparalleled mastery on the bass, and Dave’s unmistakable brilliance on the drums.
Chick Corea is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history. The buy has 63 nominations and 22 wins under his belt, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career.
John Patitucci is one of the most widely-recorded and in-demand bassists today, in any genre, having performed on countless albums with Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, B. B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock, Sting, and many others. In 1986, John was voted by his peers in the studios as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences MVP on Acoustic Bass.
For more than 35 years, Dave Weckl has developed and maintained a reputation among fans, peers, and the international music community, as one of the great living drummers. His contributions to iconic music, music education, and the gear that drummers use, are many. Modern Drummer magazine has inducted Weckl into their Hall of Fame (2000) and named him “one of the 25 best drummers of all time.”
Before Chick Corea takes the main stage, be sure to check out local duo The Otters (Jay Alm and Zach Zimmerman) at a free mini-concert in Town Enclosure Pavilion in the Center Park from 6-7:30 p.m. The duo plays “Garage Soul” music with elements of roots-rock, funk, and more. This is the Center’s third pre-show Pavillion concert of the summer.
