STAR VALLEY, WYO – The type 2 incident management team, Great Basin team 3 took command of the Marten Creek fire at 6am this morning.
Today they will focus their efforts on securing the western edge of the fire along the Greys River Road. The southern flank of the fire continued backing slowly yesterday while crews began an indirect contingency line further to the south near Cazier/Corral Creek Guard Station.
Firefighters will continue that indirect hand line, allowing the fire to slowly spread with the aid of aviation resources to slow the fire’s growth. To the north and east of the fire, personnel will be evaluating fuels and terrain looking for opportunities to engage the fire.
Another day of active fire behavior was seen today as winds caused increased visible smoke this afternoon. Air quality in the area may be at a decreased level due to particulate matter from smoke. Children, people over age 65, and those with known heart and lung problems like asthma and emphysema are more sensitive to lung irritation from these conditions. Keep in mind that risks increase the longer time you are exposed.
Marten Creek is at an estimated 4,842 acres with 0% containment. IC Taiga Rohrer has 232 personnel at his disposal to fight the blaze. It is a full suppression fire that started on Sunday, September 16. It has been labelled a human-caused fire. Further investigation is underway.
