JACKSON, Wyo. — A preliminary compilation of numbers from the 15th annual Moose Day Survey hosted by Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation (JHWF) on Feb. 25 puts the moose count at 112.
Hilary Turner, JHWF program coordinator, emphasizes that “the number will change as more data is coming in” and duplicates are identified. The unofficial number could come down to a similar number to last year, which was 101 moose.
Over 100 volunteers combed through assigned territories on Feb. 25 on foot, skies, snowshoes and in cars to search for moose and count them. The community turnout this year was a record-breaking number of volunteers, according to Turner.
The annual survey was conducted by JHWF in collaboration with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The collected data will help monitor moose population trends long-term in Jackson Hole.
