Hey, we're talking!

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Teton Literacy Center is again launching its popular language exchange program this Thursday. Language Exchange JH has become a ‘hands-on’ way of practicing and learning languages without cost while meeting new members of our community.

If you are like most of us, you took a Spanish class or a German class in high school. The verbs, the tense, the gender-specific pronouns…¡Ay, caramba! It soured you on the whole process and you earned a C for your efforts.

Later, while planning a trip to Paris, you bought Rosetta Stone and studied up. It went well for a while but you soon became distracted by Buckrail breaking news and cat videos.

No, the only true way to pick up a new language is to immerse yourself in it. Spend an hour with a native speaker and you’ll learn more than weeks of language lessons.

That’s where TLC’s Language Exchange JH program comes in. the collaboration between Central Wyoming College, Teton Literacy Center, and Teton County Library now has a brand new website as the application process gets underway this Thursday, October 4. How does it work?

¿Como funciona?

First step, get paired according to your language level, age, availability and interests. Next, receive a training. From there, you meet your partner once a week, for one hour, at the time and place of your choice. Within that hour, practice conversational skills in one language for 30 minutes, and then switch to the other language for the remaining 30 minutes.

It is important to remember that the Language Exchange JH program is not a formal language class, but an opportunity to practice conversational skills in the language you are already learning.
