JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Police Department is reminding the community that in spite of traffic this summer, it is illegal to stop, stand or park within an intersection.

It’s commonplace in major cities; “DON’T BLOCK THE BOX” signs hang at intersections reminding motorists to wait for space before pulling out, even if the light is still green, but in Jackson, the concept like the zipper merge, isn’t commonly practiced.

Public Information Specialist Lieutenant Russ Ruschill shared a post on the department’s Facebook page explaining that the intersection of US89 and WY22 has been a highly congested area this summer due to increased tourism and the construction of the Wilson Bridge.

“One thing that is prominent at the intersection which makes traffic much worse is when people who are turning left from US89 onto WY22 in the double turn lane they often find themselves stuck in the middle of the intersection,” Ruschill wrote. “This causes southbound motorists to have no opportunity to proceed southbound on US 89, thus making frustration high and the gridlock worse.”

On Thursday evening, Ruschill said he spent time at the intersection watching for violations and stopped several motorists. “No citations were issued today but a lot of education was involved,” Ruschill said. “Thanks to all of those who are exercising patience, and remember to always wear your seat belt.”
