JACKSON HOLE, WYO – When you think of a contestant like Josh Hoyer on a big network show like NBC’s The Voice, it’s often taken at face value as a make-or-break moment for a pop-minded artist. For Hoyer and his soul-funk band Soul Colossal, it was a stepping-stone towards national exposure after touring extensively for three years. The intensity of Muscle Shoals, Stax and Motown can be heard loud and clear from this veteran sounding soul band out of Nebraska. The quintet will stage up Saturday night at the Mangy Moose in between après-ski performances Friday and Sunday at Trap Bar.
“I learned a lot from being on [The Voice]. I met a lot of like-minded performers and got to understand the industry a lot more,” Hoyer told Lone Peak Lookout last summer. “In the end, it is just a very tough business. No one is going to achieve much success unless they are willing to roll up their sleeves and put in a great deal of work into their craft. There is no easy way to the top. I’m thankful to have made new fans via the show, but I am still out here working my tail off for everything the band and I are able to achieve.”
With an aim of lifting spirits and deeply connecting with audiences, Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal has been on a couple of European tours while also supporting heroes of the genre like George Clinton, Charles Bradley, and Booker T Jones. Their three-show run in the Tetons coincides with the release of their fourth full-length record, Do It Now.
Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal, 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mangy Moose ($10), and 3-6 p.m. Friday and Sunday at the Trap Bar at Grand Targhee Resort (free).
