TETON VILLAGE, Wyo. — New snow at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) has led to heightened safety measures for the rest of ski season.

JHMR announced on Thursday afternoon that it has closed its backcountry gates for the remainder of its season, which is scheduled to end on April 12. The decision was reportedly a collaboration by the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Teton County Search and Rescue and Grand Teton National Park.

“Current conditions at lower elevations make rescue difficult,” JHMR stated. “It is unsafe or not possible to use rescue toboggans. While closing the backcountry gates is infrequent, this decision was made out of a commitment to safety to both the public and rescue personnel. This safety mitigation falls within JHMR’s special use permit and a Forest Supervisor special order.”

The gates were also briefly closed in December due to low snowpack presenting rescue challenges.

Recreationists are advised to respect closures and remain within open terrain, the resort said. Watch for hidden obstacles potentially obscured by new snow.
