JACKSON, Wyo. — An annual program that evaluates and identifies the best places for bicycling in the U.S. listed Jackson, Wyoming, as No.6 among 1,500 other cities in the country.

The annual report was conducted by PeopleForBikes (PFB), a nonprofit organization based in Boulder, Colorado. It evaluates, identifies and compares the best global cities and towns for bicycling.

“For 2023, we rated 1,484 cities of all sizes throughout the U.S. and 249 international cities on the quality of their bike networks,” said PFB.

“Each city receives a City Ratings score on a scale of 0-100. A low score (0-20) indicates a weak bike network, meaning the city lacks safe bikeways or there are gaps in the network. A high score (80-100) indicates that most common destinations are accessible by safe, comfortable bike routes that serve people of all ages and abilities. For larger cities, a score of 50 is the tipping point to becoming a great place to bike.”

The average score among all U.S. cities is 23 out of 100. Cities in the top 10 score 55 out of 100 on average. In 2023, Jackson received a score of 79.

Throughout Teton County, 152 miles of dirt trails and 72 miles of separated pathways are managed by the local nonprofit Friends of Pathways. This includes 15 miles in Grand Teton National Park, too.

Sam Petri, a communications and advocacy director at Friends of Pathways, told PFB that in just one day between Willow Street and Snow King Avenue, Jackson sees around 1,500 riders using the protected pathway system.
